The Project & The Client

A hospital in Dwarka, New Delhi approached Gaddiel Industries for the design and installation of a Modular Operation Theater (MOT). The OT room had a generous floor area in terms of length and width — well-suited for a fully equipped surgical environment. However, the structural reality of the space presented a significant constraint that immediately raised concern for the operating doctor.

The RCC slab height was 9 feet 6 inches — reasonable for most builds. But a load-bearing RCC beam ran across the ceiling, with its bottom surface at just 8 feet 6 inches from the floor. Critically, this beam was positioned almost centrally through the OT — directly over the surgical zone where the Laminar Airflow (LAF) unit would need to be installed.

A Beam in the Wrong Place

In Modular OT construction, the Laminar Airflow (LAF) ceiling unit is the most critical component. It delivers HEPA-filtered, ultra-clean unidirectional airflow directly over the surgical table — and it typically requires 16 to 18 inches (1.3 to 1.5 feet) of vertical clearance to hang below the PUF ceiling. The challenge was clear:

The conventional approach would have left the OT with a cramped 7 to 7.5-foot ceiling — below the ideal surgical environment standard and uncomfortable for the medical team. Removing or modifying the RCC beam was structurally not an option. A creative, technically sound solution was needed.

Engineering Beyond Conventional Limits

When our team conducted the site survey and understood the constraints, we recognised this as a challenge we encounter and solve once or twice every month. Our response to the doctor was confident and direct: "We can give you 8 feet 2 inches to 8 feet 3 inches of PUF ceiling height — without touching the beam."

Site Assessment & Precision Measurement

Our team conducted a detailed site survey — measuring the RCC slab height (9′6″), the beam bottom (8′6″), the beam width, and the exact central position of the beam relative to the surgical zone. This data drove every subsequent engineering decision.

Custom-Engineered Laminar Airflow Unit

Rather than using a standard off-the-shelf LAF unit (which would hang 16–18 inches below the PUF ceiling), Gaddiel designed and manufactured a custom LAF unit with a compressed depth of just 16 inches — engineered specifically so that the unit body would embed partially into the beam depth, straddling both sides of the beam. The beam effectively became part of the LAF housing structure.

Beam Integration — Not Beam Removal

The customized LAF unit was designed so the beam ran through the upper section of the unit body. The LAF unit enclosed and integrated the beam within itself — with the bottom diffuser face projecting no more than 4 inches below the PUF ceiling level. The beam, rather than being an obstacle, became a structural anchor for the LAF unit.

PUF Ceiling at 8′2″ — As Committed

With the LAF unit embedding the beam and protruding only minimally below ceiling level, the PUF ceiling was installed and finished at 8 feet 2 inches — surpassing even our committed figure of 8′2″ to 8′3″, and exceeding the doctor’s best expectation of 7 feet by a full 14 inches.

Full Modular OT Completion

The project was completed with all standard Gaddiel Modular OT components — antibacterial PUF wall & ceiling panels, seamless epoxy-filled joints, HEPA-filtered laminar airflow, hermetically sealed HPCL sliding doors, conductive anti-bacterial vinyl flooring, OT pendants, peripheral LED lighting, and medical gas outlets — all within the elevated ceiling space.
